Thankyou Dave, we needed this!

I just received this email from surfire2008.org:

"Thank you for your post on SurFire2008.org - if you would please direct your questions to the Community Hotline at 831-667-2317 that would be super - we're trying to pare the notices section down to just official and social service announcements."

It was addressed to Lynda. I'm not Lynda. But I guess this means that personal posts are going to be removed from surfire2008.org.

The first action of a totalitarian government is to SILENCE the masses...usually by intimidation, threats, deprivation, bullying, isolation, and with-holding information. I believe those tactics are in place in this Basin fire situation, and it sickens me. A society or individual that surrenders without question to the authority of the 'authorities' loses the rights inherent in being 'individual'. Culture, creativity, intellectual freedom, and all else is lost. It is hard to take a stand..as the Curtis' did..and take the "legal" lumps that come, but if we are to retain any freedom, those stands must be taken. I applaud the action, the man, the family, and the results.

And I remain anonymous...for now...as I am working on something else to contribute, and don't want to be interrupted.

HERE HERE! We second and third and fourth what you said, and we won't interrupt your project!

I must add a quote to represent the "isolation" aspect of the situation I discussed above:

"We are still under ‘house arrest’ if you will.
Residents cannot leave their properties.
If found on the highway you will be escorted out of Big Sur."

(from Surfire blog today).

Could/would you add an 'archive' title or particular 'place' on this blog for people to post how they are personally FEELING through this ordeal? Not about the politics, or details, but the 'heart-strings'?

This is all I could find about the State Park:

Gel was applied to buildings on the east side and in the state park where the fire is getting close to the residences.

All the sites and blogs available about the Basin fire are great, but I think this will be THE place to post and read. We have needed such an 'open' place from the beginning, but we need it so desperately now! Thank you!

One question: is there a 'space' on this blog to post pics on thier own, or do we 'embed' them in a post....or do we need to have a website to refer to?

Also...how about a category forlisitng links to: fire-related sites, news resources, etc., and a way to post documents as files? Any of that possible on here? And...is there a way to email you these ideas and requests, rather than taking up space on the blog itself? Can't find one..

The Nepenthe webcam seems to be down...anyone know why?

Anonymous said...

We think it was because the power was down today due to a downed tree.

I received another email from surfire2008.org, notifying posters of this site for personal posts, and apologizing for the inconvenience and confusion.

Driving back into town this afternoon there was much smoke in the Little Sur. Does anyone have any information about Mike Trotter and the crew up at Alsop's old place?

Anonymous said...

Still no word! I've been asking everyone..no-one knows. I say too: please let us know if you know anything!

RE: Pico Blanco caretaker place & Mike Trotter: I called and emailed Granite Rock this am. No-one on the phone had a clue what I was talking about; 2 of the 3 emails I sent were "undeliverable". I have someone I can call who may know. I will keep trying...would be good to know. The Google fire map perimeter from yesterday shows the fire has burned past the caretaker place.

In the meantime, if anyone has any info about this, please post it here.

Dearest Big Sur Residents/Evacuees:
My heart goes out to all of you. As a New Orleanian who had to evacuate for Katrina as well as being a practicing pyschotherapist still dealing with the emotional fallout several years out, I know how painful this must be. I love Big Sur with all my heart and was both engaged and married there. It is a sacred place like no other and its inhabitants are so special. Does anyone know the present status of Deetjen's or Nepenthe? And is Soaring Jenkins/Starkey still there and allright. She married us. I would be grateful for any info on DeetJen's, Nepenthe or Soaring, either at this blog or my e-mail :dressageII@aol.com.
My heart is with you.
